That's standard for a unit with a taper crimp die.

Some of the screws on a Star are true Fillister head screws.   These are available through McMaster Carr in boxes of 100, but very reasonably priced.  These include the screws that hold the shell locator straps, the screws used to secure the powder slide cam to the aluminum base, and although not Star, the screws used on the Hulme Case feeder Cam.

Others screws were most likely machined by Star, or custom made for Star.   Although they sort of look like Cheese Head Screws, there is an important difference.   True "Cheese Head" screws have a metric thread.   If you do a Google for "Cheese Head" screws, all you will find is metric threads.   I have searched high and low duplicates of those Star screws and have not found anything close.

The price list for 1993 would be interesting.   That was getting pretty close to the end of production.

I am surprised that it has a Hulme case feeder as CPM made their own case feeder

Star Reloaders / Re: Star Lifetyme Dies
« on: May 27, 2011, 10:11:00 pm »
I have Lifetyme two stage dies for both 45 ACP and 38 Special.  Both sizing rings are carbide.

I have never been clear about the purpose of two stage sizing dies.  One member suggested they were for sizing Remington brass which he suggested was thinner.

Star did make an in-line press, but that doesn't look anything like it.

I have seen some adapters for 11/16-24 to 7/8-14 adapters on eBay from time to time, but they are not common.

If you really need 7/8-14 dies, you would be better off to sell the Star dies and buy a set of 7/8-14 dies.  There are plenty of good ones to choose from.   I might be interested in the 30 Carbine dies that you have, as well as the 38 Special 2S dies.

Star Reloaders / Re: Safety Cam Modification For Taper Crimp Die
« on: May 20, 2011, 11:54:16 am »
There are two problem with this design.  One is that it is caliber specific.  The size/length  of the "hook" is different for each caliber.   The other problem is that there had to be clearance under the taper crimp die to be able to use this safety cam.    By the way, it is an autoeject safety cam.  The extra spring works in conjunction with the case feeder to eject the loaded round with the tool head is raised.

This is the only one I have ever seen.

Dave,

I think this might be what your looking for.   I posted pictures of this a while back.   This is original Star.

I wouldn't use heat.  You can bend it.  Leave it on the tool head.   To bend it in, I give it a couple light taps with a dead blow hammer.  To move it out, I generally find some way to get a wrench on it and bend it out.  You don't have to bend it very much to change the adjustment quite a bit.

Star did a pretty good job of making it so that you can swap different tool heads on different Universal machines.  However, you cannot put a Progressive tool head on a Universal machine and vice verse without also changing the angle lever cam.

So did the tool head you are using come from a Progressive?  If so, you will not be able to bend the angle lever cam enough to compensate.

What I asked was if the number on the angle lever cam is that same number that is stamped in the tool head in the round cut out next to where the angle lever cam mounts.   If the numbers don't match (number and font), it is not the cam that was fitted to that tool head at the factory.

You can adjust alignment of the primer punch with the primer slide by bending the Angle Lever Cam #49U inwards or outwards.  To make the primer slide go in further, bend the angle lever cam outwards....just a little bit.

Does the number on the Angle Lever Cam match the number on the tool head?

Star Reloaders / Re: Modifications to powder charge bars
« on: May 04, 2011, 11:33:53 am »
The Hornady bushings are 1/2" high while the 00 charge bars are 5/16" thick.  So no, you can't use the Hornady bushings in a drilled out 00 charge bar.

Berdon, and I think another company offered 00 charge bars with bushing sets, but no one offers bushings for 00 charge bars at this time.

I sell a 1/2" charge bar that accepts Hornady bushings.  I also include a set of spacers to convert a 00 powder slide housing to a 1/2" housing.  I am currently out of stock, but I plan to make a run of them in the near future.

I see that you have a Phelps Progressive (not Universal).   I knew Phelps offered a Progressive machine, but this is the first one I have ever seen.
