powder data
« on: December 17, 2005, 11:49:43 am »
List,
Would anyone like to share any data they have regarding their powder charge bars?? For example, if you use a charge bar marked as 3.5 BE to meter W231 instead.? What does it drop/weigh?? Realizing many of the powder charge bars are for fixed amounts of a specific powder - they can be used for other powders but what is the amount??

Rather than reinventing the wheel here, I think all? of us can benefit from telling others what we know and have experimented with.? If you post here, I'll record the info and put together a list of everyone's data.?

TIA,
-Steve

Saw reference to powder chart. Contacted Ed Looney about availability.
I contacted him, (over 2 years later than his post) Still had and faxed a copy to me.
Very helpful and informational.

:-X I don't know if this is any help regarding the different powder slides. I use an adjustable slide and weigh my charges to the particular recipe I am looking for. Ive done that for many years and it just made more sense to me then buying a lot of different slides. Again I know this does not address your question directly it just seams like a good idea :).

I prefer to use the original powder slides, but I have found that you can't trust the markings, both because some powders have changed over the years, and because many of the original powder slides have been modified.  I find that Bullseye powder slides always drop .2-.3 grains more than what's marked on the slide.

I have measured the hole size on all of my powder slides and calculated the volume of the hole.  I then look up that volume on the Lee Auto Disk chart to see how much powder of any particular type that slide should drop.  I comes out remarkably close.  http://www.leeprecision.com/cgi-data/instruct/AD2302.pdf

Star powder slides tend to have tapered holes, so I measure the diameter at both the top and bottom of the hole and take the average.
