Star Reloaders / Moon unit round flipper
« on: July 17, 2013, 07:04:40 am »
Hello gents,
I have a moon unit flipper on my star progressive that flips the loaded round out of the shellplate.
It works perfectly except for one issue......the inside finger of the flipper comes to rest on the shell plate thrust nut and this means it is not perfectly centred around the loaded round, so there is a little pressure from the outside finger of the flipper on the outside of the loaded round, causing it to tilt in towards the centre of the press. When I say outside/inside I'm referring to the rounds orientation on the press.
It hasn't been an issue with conical projectiles but I've just changed to a flat nose projectile and every now and then one of the tilted rounds hits the mouth of the taper crimp die on the upstroke, because it is tilted.
I'm loading 38 super, this may not be a problem with the larger 45acp.
I have the shellplate thrustnut adjusted down as far as I care to go.

Anyone else that uses a moon flipper had this issue and come up with a solution?

Thanks in advance.

Star Reloaders / Purpose of case clipping primer slide angle lever #48?
« on: September 25, 2011, 08:39:20 am »
I'm wondering why the case, after priming and during indexing, clips the leading edge of the angle lever and moves it in and out a liittle?
Am I missing something obvious?
Is it to create a little tension to index against?

Star Reloaders / Hulme feeding problem/38 supercomp
« on: September 10, 2011, 08:31:04 am »
I'm having some difficulty getting my Hulme to feed reliably, about 1 in every 30 or so cases hangs up....it will come out base first parallel to the shell plate(ie turned 90 degrees from the upright)...or...will just tip enough in the Hulme to hang up, tipping say 25 degrees back/away from the press and locking up the Hulme bolt.
The top plate is M3 and oriented correctly for 38 super.
The Hulme is spotless and I can't find any burrs etc.
I can repeat the jam even with the Hulme off the Star and activating it by hand, but I can't work out why it's happening.

Any advice gratefully received !!

Star Reloaders / What came closest to a Star?
« on: September 06, 2011, 09:35:17 am »
Not so much in terms of a copy, but general quality of manufacture for any progressive or semi progressive reloading press.(non commercial)
Was there anything even near Star quality?
Did the RL1000 cut it?

Star History / STAR UNIVERSAL FOUND BRAND NEW/UNUSED, IN BOX(post 1)

This press was located in storage in Tucson Arizona and I'm told was owned by a Mr Seagerson(now passed), unsure if spelling is correct. He was advisedly a pilot in WW2 USAF.If anyone knows of this gentleman I would be very pleased to hear from them.
There is no doubt this press has never loaded a round.
It is a little gummed up from sitting in it's box for so long but I'm thankful for the factory lube and grease as there is only the smallest amount of surface rust as you can see.
Price list that was enclosed is dated 1965, the base has the bolt on powder slide cam housing and the tool head has the 3/8 taper crimp hole.Anyone care to nominate a year of manufacture, 1965 likely?
All the parts and extras are also unused.I'm unsure what the 2 items to the right of the attached picture are, one is just a length of steel rod and the other I have no idea, could it be a primer pocket cleaner???
Hope you enjoy the pics, there are more attached in post 2.

Star Reloaders / Hulme M3 top plate-switching around
« on: August 27, 2011, 11:35:23 pm »
Need some advice please!
Starting to load ammo on my star for the first time(licensing procedures in Australia cause long delays...) and am having feeding problems with the Hulme.
About every 10/15 cases was coming tipped sideways(base first) at say 45degrees or so and causing a hangup.

Seemed to me that the gap between the case mouth and the bottom of the Hulme top plate was allowing this to happen, so I switched the top plate through 180degrees...ie front to back...so that the case no longer has the space in the top plate channel to allow it to flip over. The case mouth is now almost touching the bottom of the top plate and so has no room to tip over.So far, now feeding beautifully.

Is this the way it's meant to be?
Is the channel there for .38 special and reversing the plate to the non channel end is correct for .38super and .45?

Thanks in advance

Star Reloaders / My first Star
« on: January 18, 2011, 09:30:00 am »
Well here goes with my first attempt at a few pics of my first Star.
I must say a brief thank you to Bruce(rbwillnj) who went above and beyond to set this press up for me in .38supercomp and get it safely to Australia.
The high quality of Bruce's parts and press restoration was well matched by his determination to help generally.
Thanks also to Dave(fc60) for the wonderful dies and Ray/Ruby Brandes for the terrific indexer and case kicker.
I've learnt that it's one thing to read about Stars and look at pics and want one, but it's wasn't until I actually got mine on the bench and stripped it down that I really fully appreciated the quality that goes into these machines.
I couldn't be happier, a Star is surely one of the finer things in life.
Thank to all for your contributions to this site, it's a great resource for newcomers like myself.
