Title: 44 Mag powder Bar
Post by: LeupoldMRK4 on December 02, 2011, 09:20:21 pm
I am set up to load 44 mag except a powder bar.  I have a "OO" powder housing.  I have heard 2400 is good for the 44 mag but I cant throw that large with out getting a bigger housing.  Any suggestions?  Many Unique powder?  Can I get a decent charge of that threw a "OO" size bar?

I would say that you could get by with a 1/2" housing, and a 5/8" housing might be a better choice.   Rich Daniels makes 5/8" Powder Slide Housings and 5/8" Adjustable Powder slides.  I make a 1/2" Powder Slide that accepts Hornady bushings.  The Powder slide kit includes spacers to convert your 00 powder slide housing to a 1/2" housing.

Hornady's largest bushing drops 15.5 grains of 2400.  With no bushing in place the 1/2" hole in the 1/2" powder slide will drop about 21.5 grains of 2400

I have a 1/2" bar that is stamped 4227- 18 gr which will compute to about 18.6 -2400 .I do not know if the hole has been opened up. It measures about . 460".
I also have  a 5/8" bar stamped 296-22gr which will compute to about 19 gr 2400. This bar may have been opened up as it also measures .460".
I have not checked either to see what they throw.

Anyone have an OEM "OOO" or "OOOO" housing and bar?  For Sale?

Actually, "000" and "0000" are Rich Daniels designations.   Star referred to these as 1/2" and 5/8"

I have never seen an OEM 5/8" powder slide housing and I don't think Star made them.  As mentioned before, Rich Daniels does make and sell them.  Star sold 5/16" spacers to convert a "00" powder slide housing to a 5/8" housing.

Greetings,

My Father-in-law has a mix of Star and Phelps machines. In a parts box he does have a powder housing stamped "5/8". It is a casting, so I think it is an original Star or Phelps item. The parts are 20+ years old, long before replica items appeared.

There is also a mating brass powder bar stamped "20 gr 2400". Again, impossible to tell who machined it.

Cheers,

Dave

I know Star sold 5/8" powder slides, I have seen them listed on their price lists, but I have never seen a 5/8" powder slide housing, so it's good to hear that they actually did make them.  .

I'm not surprised that they made them, I just figured that by now I would have seen one.  I have seen plenty of "00" housings converted to 5/8" with spacers.
